Easter Fishing Forcast 04/21/2011

Inshore:We are having a great “Spring Sea Mullet” run this year. We have not had one this good in a few years. Most are being caught in the Turning Basin back to the Inlet. I had a few good reports coming from right outside the Inlet in the Shipping Channel and up at the Dead Tree Hole also. You will need Spec-Rigs with a 2oz to 3oz bank sinker, tipped with Bait Shrimp, Fishbites Blood Worms or Shrimp. We have some really good bait shrimp in stock that has been working very well on the Mullets. We will have all you need through the Easter Weekend. Reports have been there are lots of Gray Trout in the same areas to be caught. Tons of small fish but if you pick through them you can get a good fish for your keeper Gray Trout that you are allowed to keep. Best action on the Gray Trout has been on Jigging Sting Silvers and Spec-Rigs tipped with Shrimp. The 1/4oz Spec-Rigs seem to work better on the Grays because it’s bigger and has a larger hook than the small ones for the Sea Mullets.Â
The Redfish action is heating up now in the marsh areas, the Haystacks would be a good place to start looking. Shark Island has started to get some schools showing up there also. A customer came by this week to get a citation for a Redfish that he caught at Shark Island that went 45inches. Just this week the reds have started to hit Topwater Lures. Berkley Gulp, Z-Man Baits and DOA’S all have been working well so far. Cut Mullet, Finger Mullet and Live Mud Minnows have been working well for the Redfish also.
Blue Fish are all over the place from the Inlet up and down the beaches. Their are from 2lbs to 4lbs in size range with a few larger ones being caught. Stingsilvers, Crippled Herrings, Jig Fish, Gotch-Plugs and Hopkins all are working well for the Blue Fish.Â
The Flounder have moved into the Near Shore Reefs with some good catches this week. Live Mud Minnows and Spro Bucktails 2oz to 3oz tipped with Berkley Gulp 4” baits are working well. Also, we have some “NEW UNCLE JOSH FLOUNDER STRIPS” that will work well on Spro Bucktails or Flounder Rigs. There have been a few Flounder caught in the marsh and creeks also using Live Mud Minnows.Â
I had a report come in this week of some False Albacore being caught just off shore of the beach. They has been birds diving all week just off the beach. That's what you want to look for when searching for False Albacore. Jig Fish Lures and Crippled Herrings work great on the Albacore. Just remember you want to keep your lure small because that’s what they are feeding on small glass minnows.Â
I have heard of some Bonito off the New River Inlet, so they are making their way up here. Any day they will be showing up around AR 315,320 and 330 reefs. Just this week there have been some BAIT BALLS showing just off the beach, so in the next week or any day the Cobia should be showing up. There have all ready been some spotted offshore of us.
Pier / Surf: The Oceanna and Sheraton Pier has been producing large numbers of Sea Mullets. It seems the best bite is late afternoon into the night. Spec-Rigs and Bottom Rigs tipped with bait shrimp are working the best. Puffer Fish, Hog Fish, Spots and Dog Fish all being caught bottom fishing also from the piers. Just this week they have started to catch Blue Fish off the end of the piers on Gotcha-plugs, the hot color seems to be Red/White Gold hooks. Up at Fort Macon and along the surf zone they are picking up Sea Mullets, Puffers, Hog Fish, Black Drum, Redfish, Bluefish and Dog Fish. Most are using Bait Shrimp, Squid, Cut Mullet, Finger Mullet, Live Mud Minnows and Sand Fleas.
Offshore:The Offshore Boats have are having some good results this week with Wahoo, King Mackerel, Yellow Fin, Black Fin, and Dolphin. Most are fishing from the 14 out to the Big Rock. You just need to find the warm water breaks fro the best action. Most are using Small & Medium Ballyhoo. We have a good stock of FRESH CAUGHT BONIC BALLYHOO in stock. Â
So take advantage of this holiday weekend come down and wet a line. Drop by the shop, we will be glad to help you in anyway to put you on “FISH”.Â
