Fishing Report 02/08/2011

A few fish is being caught but not all that many. The winter we are having has pushed the water temperatures down so much it is shutting down most of the fish. But we have seen the water temperatures come up in the last few weeks, so that might mean for an early spring,

Talked to a customer yesterday that has been catching a few Redfish at the Fort Macon Rocks and off the beach in front of the circle. He is using cut mullet and finger mullet to get the bites. There is also some Dog Fish out along the surf and around the Fort Macon Rocks. They can be caught on any kind of cut bait fished on the bottom.

There is still good numbers of Redfish up at the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty. On days when the weather will let you get there guys are catching lots of Redfish. They are ranging anywhere from 18 inches to 30 inches. There has been a few caught up and down Shackleford Banks but it seems the best bite is at the Cape. Most are using Berkley Gulp Baits, cut mullet and live mud minnows.

I have not heard of any Speckled Trout being caught in the last few weeks. But have heard some good news since they closed it, there have been some schools of big fish working some of the creeks in the area. They don’t seem like they want to bite anything but there are some around. That’s good new for the future of the fishery.

There is still a good bite going on at the Trent River for stripers. A few miles up the river from Lawson Creek Boat Ramp has been a good area to look for some action. Most are having the best luck on anything in the chartreuse color. I have a customer that is having his best luck on a 1/4oz Speck- Rig tipped with a Berkley Gulp Chartreuse Jerkshad. The striper bite is still on fire out of Oregon Inlet, fishermen are having no trouble getting their limits of big fish. Most are using Mojo Rigs in the Chartreuse and White color. Some of the guys are having good luck trolling Mann's Stretch 25s and 30s.

Hopefully, spring is right around the corner and the fishing will be getting ready to fire up in the area. Let's hope that “Mr Groundhog” knows what he is talking about.
