Fishing Report 01/20/2016

As most of you know, we have been having some issues with our Fishing Report section on our website. Sorry for the delay but we are back up and running.
Over the last few weeks, we've had cold air finally move in on us, but it’s not been too bad. This morning we saw our first signs of ice on the canel behind the shop, but as I write this report it just about as pretty as it can get for January. No wind and temperatures are in the mid 50's.
Speckled Trout has picked up over in the Neuse River creeks, still not what we're used to seeing this time of year but anglers are catching some keeper fish. Most of the action is coming from the Oriental side of the river. Anglers are having good luck on 17MR Mirrolures, Berkley Gulp, Billy Bay Shrimp and Z-Man plastics. As far as around Morehead, the Haystacks are still holding a few fish, but the bite has slowed down a bit. I've not heard all that much from the Cape Lookout Jetty since we haven't seen all that good of weather to make it up there to fish. We've been seeing a few fish being caught in the channels around Atlantic Beach and in the Hoop Pole Creek area.
As far as the bottom fishing around the port, the cold weather has slowed things down, bait up with Bait Shrimp and Fishbites and fish the bottom from the Turning Basin out to the Inlet you probably will run across some Sea Mullets, Puffer Fish, Hog Fish and Gray Trout. The bite's not hot and heavy but you could catch some fish if you're wanting to get out of the house and on the water.
I can report there's some Black Drum stacking up on some of the creeks along Bouge Sound, bait shrimp fished under the docks, along the creeks have been producing the most action.
If you can catch the winds right Sea Bass fishing out in the 15 mile range has been pretty good. AR330, North West Places, Big 10/ Little 10, 1700 Rock and the Atlas Tanker should be holding fish. Squid fished on the bottom will get you some action. If you go on out to the 30-35 mile range around the 14 Buoy and 90ft Drop your luck could be better..
Bluefin Tuna fishing has pretty much come to a hault over the last few weeks, I've only heard of 1 fish brought to the docks over the last week. Anglers are saying; they don’t think the Bluefin are gone they're just having a hard time getting a good bite. I'm still hearing of a few boats venturing out on the nice days heading offshore to Wahoo fish and still are having some action around the Big Rock area.
It’s wintertime here at the beach and I tell anglers all the time, if the weather's nice all you can do is just get out on the water and see what you can come up with.
