Well, I think old man winter has finally given us a good taste that it’s actually wintertime. It's been hard to tell here since the last few weeks it's been in the 50’s and with some days up into the 60’s. So far this winter, we've been very blessed without any really cold days or nights keeping our water tempertures up.

I feel like if we can make it through February, we just might not have any freeze kill in our creeks this year. So, with all the fish that were around throughout the fall and early winter, the spring fishing should be “great”. It’s that time of the year when I think all of us start to get that “Cabin Fever” feeling. But on the up side of things, we're working to get the shop ready for our show orders to start rolling in and filling the walls with new tackle in order to be ready when the weather breaks.

As far as fishing goes – it has been slow, there's just not that many people fishing. But, we do have reports of some   fish being caught despite old man winter.

We're still seeing some Blue Fin Tuna action. What we're seeing is around 1 to 5 fish a day are sold at times then we might see a few days without any bites. The action's been just outside the inlet back up to the Cape Lookout area. I know some of the largest fish that's been caught this year has been in water 40ft or less. How the season is shaping up we should see Tuna though February until they move on. Over the next few weeks, will tell us if they're going to stay around because this week the bite's been the slowest we've seen since they've shown up. Blue Water Candy Jags are  working very good rigged up with Select Ballyhoo. We have plenty of both in-stock and can show you what colors have been working the best if you want to try your luck on the giants.

We're still seeing some nice Speckled Trout come through the shop, not many but we're seeing some fish. A few have been caught from the surf but most have come from the back of the creeks. It’s going to be hit or miss now with the water so cold but if you can catch a warm day, hit the creeks who knows what you might catch. Anglers who are fishing are using Live Mud Minnows along with fishing Mirrolures. Along with the trout, you might run across a few Redfish and Black Drum to be caught on bait shrimp just fishing on the bottom.

Since, we've been having a few warm weather days a few anglers I've talked with have ran across some nice schools of Redfish back in the creeks and bays. This time of the year, the water gets “Gin” clear and can produce some pretty great action. If you like to sight fish this is the time to do it in our area, as you can see everything. Berkley Gulp baits seem to be working the best, just remember if you find some fish, it might take awhile to get them to bite so be patient since the water is pretty cold.

Over the last few weeks, I've had a few customers head out to the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty to see what was going on and they caught good numbers of fish. Small Speckled Trout, Redfish, Black Drum, Sheepshead and a few Taugs are hanging on the rocks. From what I've been hearing, the biggest key on getting bite is you have to be right on the rocks. One customer told me, they had to take floats and get their baits right over top of the rocks to any bites. If you were to far away from the rocks nothing; not even a bite.

Tim, the “Trout Man” from the shop went out this week over on the East Side of Cape Lookout and had a pretty good day bottom fishing. They caught all the nice Black Sea Bass you'd want plus Trigger Fish and Grouper (but Grouper Season is closed), they even caught a nice American Red Snapper. They fished the Northeast Rocks out to the Atlas Tanker finding fish willing to bite at every stop. Fishing Squid off the bottom and cut Cigar Minnows will do the trick along with jigging Blue Water Candy Roscoe Jigs will produce a bite. Also, anglers are having good luck with bass out around the North West Places. Right now is some of the best bottom fishing we'll see all year with the Sea Bass and Trigger Fish you just have to watch the weather for good window days in order to get out.
