Fishing Report 01/12/2011

The cold weather is setting back in on us and has slowed fishing down. We have not weighed in a Speckled Trout since New Year's weekend. Hopefully, most of the small Speckled Trout that were all over the place this past fall move out to deeper waters before all this cold weather hit. If so, we should have a great year on Speckled Trout in 2011. I have heard of a few kills of Speckled Trout this winter but not any huge numbers like last year’s kill that we had in the area. There have been some big trout seen in some of the creeks in the last few weeks that were doing fine just would not hit anything. The guys going over to Cape Lookout at night have not been having much luck since this last cold snap.

There are still some Redfish hanging around the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty, Shackleford Banks and Shark Island. The Redfish will stay in these areas through the winter. The best time to have a chance to catch some Redfish is picking the warmest days. On the warm days, the Redfish will feed more than on the cold days. It just takes a degree difference in the water temperature to turn on a hot bite. The best way to catch them in the cold winter water is Live Mud Minnows. We will have them through the winter here at the shop.

The Black Sea Bass fishing has been great when the weather will let you out there. AR 285, 30 Minute Rock, 1700 Rock and the Atlas Tanker are all great spots to try. The Sea Bass really pile up at these places in the winter. Squid fished on a Black Sea Bass rig fished on the bottom is the best way to catch them.

Still no Stripers, one of my charter guys has been trying about twice a week for them but has not caught any yet. But if you want to get on some Striper action, we are running trips out of Oregon Inlet for Stripers, the fishing is as good as it gets up there right now. Give us a call or email me if you would like to book at Oregon Inlet for a striper trip with us.
