Fishing Report 12/29/2016

Most of the anglers that's been fishing are targeting Speckled Trout. The back of the creeks in the deeper pockets have been producing some fish. We've seen some trout at Radio Island Rock Jetty this week but most have been smaller fish, but some anglers are catching a few nice keepers in the mix. Taylor's Creek area has been producing some Trout and Redfish around the oyster bar areas over the last few days. Also, I'm hearing of some action up Adams Creek toward the Neuse River, back down toward the South River.
I've been getting a lot of calls about the Cape Lookout Jetty but I haven't seen any solid reports from there this week. With the cold front coming our way in the next day or so it could turn on up there Saturday and Sunday with the light winds that's forecasted. What's working best: Mirrolure 17MR’s, Paul Brown Soft Dines, Yo-Zuri 3DS Minnows, Z-Man Trout Tricks, Berkley Gulp 3” Shrimp and don’t forget Live Mud Minnows.
Also, getting good reports of some Black Drum and Red Drum holding in the creeks, most of what I'm hearing has been caught on bait shrimp fished right off the bottom. It’s the time of the year, if you can catch the water right to run the Surf Zone you might be able to find some schooling Redfish. There's been a few schools hanging along Shackleford Banks but they have been hard to locate. The water is super clear so when you come across a school you'll for sure know it.
Also, a good place to try in the winter is the Cape Lookout Shoals around Shark Island. Again, you'll know if you come across them because it’s usually a lot of fish this time of the year. I can report some bottom action at AR330 this week with Sea Bass and a few Flounder. I'm sure there's a few fish also hanging around AR320 and AR315
Wish I had more to report but it's late December so I'm just thankful the weather has stayed mild enough to keep some fish around for us to catch on the pretty days. I hope the mild weather continues through the winter because that could be huge for the 2017 Fishing Season. Last winter was one of the mildest we had seen in a long while and fishing was pretty good this year, especially our fall Speckled Trout and Flounder bite was one of the best.
