Fishing Report 12/03/2015

Something has been in my heart and on my mind coming into this Holiday Season. I've been trying to figure out a way we could reach out and make a difference in someone's life this Christmas. We looked into the Angel Tree and Toys for Tots just to mention a few.  Something kept telling me there has to be children in our community, in which some of these great organizations just won't reach, that are in need this Holiday Season. After months of looking and searching we got connected with the Director of Marketing and Special Events for the Boys & Girls Clubs in the Coastal Carolina area.

They have 4 children in one club that their parents are truly in a tough place in life. After finding this out, we decided to do a Toy Drive here at the shop for these children this Christmas, giving these 4 children a way to enjoy Christmas like others across the world and take some relief off their parents just trying to make ends meet.

This experience really hit home and touched my heart when I received their Christmas wish lists. These children have no idea anyone is trying to help them out, these letters are just letters of hope, that just maybe, Santa will read them. The lists are below from each child, if it’s in your heart to help out email me at  chasintailsoutdoors@earthlink.net. The ChasinTails Outdoors crew and my family are going to be getting gifts also. Just let me know what you're bringing so we can mark it off the list as we go. If you want to help out and don't live in town you can ship gifts to the shop at 709 Atlantic Beach Causeway, Atlantic Beach NC, 28512. Don't worry about wrapping the gift, just drop it off or drop it in the mail and send it our way.  The director of the Boys and Girls Club is going to be coming by the shop a few days before Christmas to pick up the packages to make sure they are delivered to each house before Christmas morning for the children to open.

Thanksgiving has come and gone; now Christmas Holidays are on the horizon. It’s been a crazy fall for fishing so far. We were talking at the shop just this week how October has been November and looks like December is going to be our November with all the warm weather we've had. I can’t remember the last time when the water temperature was still at 60 going into December and by the looks of the long term forecast we don’t have any really cold weather coming our way over the next week or so. So, with that said; fishing still should remain pretty good until we really start to see days of cold weather. It looks like after today with the cold front blowing through, we're going to see a decent weekend with sunny skies and not so bad winds for fishing.

Inshore / Nearshore:

We're still seeing some good Sea Mullet action, with their late arrival this fall. The best action has been in the Turning Basin area and a few reports of some good catches at the Dead Tree Hole area. They don’t seem to be everywhere so you have to look for them, move around and try different water depths. Spec-Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp and Fish Bites is working the best to fill your cooler. While Sea Mullet fishing, you'll catch some nice Hog Fish and Puffer Fish off the bottom.

Speckled Trout action has been steady over the last week. We're seeing tons of small fish in the area, anglers are reporting back with catching 50 fish without really any problem. You just have to pick through them to get a limit for the dinner table. Just over this past week, we've seen some big fish being caught. We've weighed 5 fish in the last week or so that's been over the 5lb mark and another fish this week that was just under the 7lb mark. Cape Lookout Rock Jetty has a a good number of fish around it now, it's been hit or miss as on Thanksgiving Day there were good numbers of keepers caught, then the next day not so many.

We did weigh a big fish that was caught at Cape Lookout this week that was just under the 7lb mark. Also, the Haystacks, Radio Island and even AR315 is holding some Speckled Trout. So, what we're seeing Trout Season is far from over, it really seems it's just getting started since the warm fall we've had. Keep in mind year after year, the largest fish are always caught when we get some cold weather and water temps get down in the 50’s which hasn't happened yet. We still have Live Shrimp in-stock and it looks like we'll have them over the next week or so, along with Live Mud Minnows through the winter.

Gray Trout fishing has been good at AR315 this week, the fish that are holding at the reef also seem to be larger fish than in the Turning Basin and around the bridges. Nick, from the shop has caught a few over the last two weekends at the reef that were in the 3 to 4lb range. We're still seeing good numbers, I know the tagging crew went out the night before last caught 30 or so just in a matter of a few hours around the Coast Guard Station area.

Albacore is still in the area, its late to see them but the bait is still here and the water temp is around 60 and they're still feeding up. Anglers have been finding them around the inlet and along the beaches. There's still a few shrimp boats working along the beaches, if you can find one of these and get behind it you'll find very good numbers of fish.

With the good weather window we had last weekend some anglers went back out after King Mackerel and did pretty good. The best action seems to be at the Big 10 / Little 10 area, it does seem the fish are moving out but still there's some around to catch. Last Sunday, we weighed a nice one that went over 40lbs and I heard from anglers there were more good catches from that area.

I've not heard of much on the Flounder action over the last week on the inside waters or around the Port Wall. I think those fish have moved out into the ocean. Now, I did hear of some good catches from AR 330 and a few being caught at AR315 over the past week.

Piers / Surf:

As for the bottom fishing from the piers – Blow Fish has been the name of the game and along the Surf Zone. Also, anglers are catching a few Sea Mullets, Bluefish and Hog Fish. The Speckled Trout fishing along the beaches has been pretty good over the last week, but not many anglers are fishing. There's been lots of small fish but the last few days anglers have seen very good action with the keeper fish, just about good as you can expect from our beaches. Most of the action has been from the Oceanana Pier up toward the Fort Macon Park. Radio Island beach is also seeing some action right at dark and after dark.

Offshore:

I saw some Wahoo action this past Sunday with the good weather, the boats that went each caught a few fish. Most of the action was from the Big 10/Little 10 area out toward the Big Rock area. It’s just that time of year, we only get a few days good enough to get that far out. Most boats are still after the Blue Fin Tuna bite and what we're seeing is decent fishing, with 20 to 40 boats fishing a day they're bringing anywhere from 2 to 5 fish a day to the docks. So, not great fishing but we're seeing some steady action on the giants.

It’s getting Black Bass time at the North West Places, each December we see some great action and through the winter on bass in that area. So, don't miss out on this action on days you can get out there.
