Team Chasin Tails Outdoors is back from the Redfish Tour Championship held in Chalmette, Louisanna last week.  Man, what an unbelievable fishery they have down in the Bayou. I would have to say it’s a very special place to go fish for Redfish and Speckled Trout. We had one of the best fishing trips that we have ever been on that's for sure. It was one trip that I will never forget being able to share it with my Dad. It’s a place that you would not ever believe fishing could be that good until you get there and see it for your own eyes.

Day one we came into the scales with 15.45lbs not what we were hoping for but we were happy with it being the first time down there. Along with fishing against 101 teams that came from all over the nation, the best of the best in the Redfish world was there. We knew going into the tournament we would have to have over 16lbs each day to have a shot at the win. We just did not have enough water on day one to get back into a pond that we found pre-fishing the week before with lots of 8lbs plus fish in it. So, we decided to fish the outer edge and take what we could get and not risk on getting stuck on day one and not even being able to weigh in.

Our goal on day two was to bring in over 16lbs and move up to where we thought we would make a check. We made the long run back to the same area, on my first two casts we had over 12lbs in the boat taking just about 3 minutes. We caught fish after fish up grading to over 14lbs in no time. We had one over 8lbs before we made the move to try to get in the pond that was holding lots of big Redfish. We knew it was going to be very close getting in and then getting out. Once we got in there it was on like I have never seen. I was measuring and weighing fish and dad was flopping 8lb'ers over the boat just as hard as he could go. At one time we had to stop fishing because I could not cull fish that fast. It was very nerve racking releasing 8lbs plus fish knowing that they were good no matter what you did you could not make them go over the line of 27 inches. We decided to keep the longest and the heaviest and go for it hoping it would pay off. The two fish we were taking to the scales could have not been a hair longer they were as perfect as perfect gets. We stopped fishing around 12:30 pm headed back having to stop and get gas to make the long run back. We did not want to take any chances with fish like that in the boat. I had weighed both fish knowing that one was around 8 1/2lbs and the other over 9lbs. I told my dad that we just had two good 8lb fish and I did not want to freak him out anymore than what he already was. Heck, I did not really believe it myself when I saw it going over 9lbs on the Boga scale.

When we got back to the weigh-in we could not wait any longer we were ready to weigh our catch. The first fish was over 8lbs then our second fish (that my dad caught) went 9.25lbs I just wish you could have seen the smile on his face when Jerry called out our weight 17.82lbs just unbelievable in our books. Come to find out later that was the biggest bag brought to the scales during the whole event. We knew we were going to move up in the standings but didn't know how much. That bag of fish jumped us up to 10th place!  Man, a "Top Ten" in the Redfish Tour Championship against the best in the nation we could not have been happier.  We brought home some great looking trophies and over $1,000 in cash. The only thing we really thought about was - just what would of happened if we could have gotten in that pond on day one of the event.

I want to say "thanks" to Lake and Bay Boats for making a fast boat to allow us to make a long run. Also, for making a great live release well to keep almost 18lbs of Redfish "Live and Healthy". Marsh Works baits for some great Spinnerbaits that held up to those very fat Bayou Redfish. Berkley Gulp for making the best artificial bait on the market. Fenwick HMG rods for helping us put lots of Redfish in the boat and Dawia Reels spooled with Sufix 832 got the job done.

Again, this was a trip we will remember and cherish forever!

Some Pictures From The Redfish Tour Championship.

Inshore: Man, the fishing has really been on fire over the last week. The Speckled Trout are showing up in great numbers with lots of nice fish in the 2lbs to 3lbs range being caught all over. The Haystacks, Radio Island Jetty, Cape Lookout Rock Jetty, Fort Macon Rock Jetty and along the beach especially around the stop nets that they have been setting along the beach is producing fish. Anglers have been having great luck on Berkley Gulp Baits, Mirrolures, Gotcha Grubs, Honey Hole Grubs, DOA Baits, Z-Man Baits, Zoom Baits and Trout Killers. Really, they are having just as good luck on artificial now than live Shrimp. But a good live Shrimp or a live Mud Minnow fished on a popping cork is hard to beat this time of year for Speckled Trout.

The Redfish bite has really fired up over the last week in the ocean.  I have heard reports from down around Bear Inlet and Hammocks Beach in the 1000s with lots of fish working the surf zone in that area. Also, the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty has been holding lots of Redfish. I heard of anglers catching over a 100 Redfish last week in that area. There are still a few being caught around the Haystacks, Core Creek, Radio Island and at the Fort Macon Rocks. Most are having best luck on Berkley Gulp Baits, Mullet and live Mud Minnows.

The Sea Mullets are starting to show up now in good numbers. The hot spots have been from the Coast Guard Station back to the Turning Basin. Also, I heard of some good catches from the Dead Tree Hole area along Shackleford Banks. Most are having the best luck on Spec-Rigs tipped with some good bait shrimp or Fishbites. They should just get thicker and thicker as we get into November.

The Flounder fishing is still decent along the Port Wall and Bridges most are making their way out to the inlet and back offshore. But you still can catch them good until December in the inshore waters. A good place to look this time of year is AR 315, 320 and 330 reefs as they will group up as they head offshore for the winter. Most are having the best luck on Spro Buctails tipped with Berkley Gulp and live Mud Minnows fished on a Carolina Rig.

The still is lots of Bluefish hanging around the Inlet to be caught.  They are feeding on just about anything you cast to them. There are still good numbers of Gray Trout around the inlet back to railroad tracks. You can catch them on Gulp Baits, Spec-Rigs, Stingsilvers, Bait Shrimp and Crippled Herrings.

Piers/Surf: The Piers and Surf has been seeing great numbers of Speckled Trout in the last few days. Most are being caught on Lime Green Grubs, Berkley Gulp Baits and Mirrolures. They have been putting out the stop nets and when they are there anglers are having great luck fishing for trout around them producing some of the best trout fishing we have seen in the last few years along the beach.  I heard last week everyone fishing in the surf was catching Speckled Trout just as fast as they could catch them. Radio Island Rock Jetty has also been producing good numbers of Speckled Trout too.  Redfish and Black Drum has been in the mix also. Most have been using cut mullet and bait shrimp for the drum. There have been some good numbers of Sea Mullets being caught off the piers and in the surf zone using bait shrimp fished on a bottom rig. We are still seeing a few spots, pompano, hogfish, bluefish and croakers in the mix for the bottom fisherman.

Offshore: There are still good numbers of kings hanging around the Atlas Tanker, North West Places, Barge Wreck and AR 285. The east side should be really getting some smokers on it as we get into November. As for on out, we have not had many reports over the last week. It’s just been to windy offshore to get out to the Wahoo and other bottom fish. Looks like it’s going to be the same way for the next few days.
