FISHING REPORT 03/11/2015

Things are looking up, we've been in the 60’s over the last few days and the 10 day forecast shows the warm weather staying around. Birds are starting to build nests and we're even beginning to see flowers and trees starting to bud. So, with that – I think the worst of winter is behind us and we can now get this “Fishing Season” started. Just with this week's warm up, we are already seeing some fish catching action.

The Nearshore / Offshore bottom fishing was great over the weekend and into the first of this week.

Tim, from the shop went out Monday and hit stops from insight of the Cape Lookout Light House to 30 miles out. He reported back some great news, most all the reefs just off the beach on the East Side like AR 285 were loaded down with Blue Fish plus he saw some good schools of Albacore. So, if things stay like they are now' we should start to see the Blue Fish and Albacore move toward the beach in the next few weeks. Also, he caught a few keeper Sea Bass and Flounder. Spro 2oz White Bucktails tipped with 4” White Gulp Shrimp and Squid on the bottom brought the fish in the boat. As far as the Blue Fish and Albacore, they were hitting just about anything you dropped down to them. Sea Striker Jig Fish and Stingsilvers were working well.

Now, the further you go offshore the better the bottom fishing gets. Try places like AR 305, 240 Rock, 210 Rock, AR 300, Northeast Rock, then back to the Atlas Tanker area you'll find plenty of nice sized Sea Bass, Trigger Fish, Snappers, Grouper (closed) and Ring-Tails. Fishing with Squid, Mackerel and Cigar Minnows on the bottom have been working the best. Few boats went out Monday and caught all the bottom fishing they wanted to bring home.

I've not heard of any Wahoo or Yellow Fin yet but if things stay going like they've been this week, it’s not going to be long. It wouldn't surprise me that someone will be bring one the scales soon.

As far as inshore – we've seen some action this week too with anglers catching some Redfish in the marsh areas. The marsh around Swansboro is holding some good schools of Redfish. I talked to some customers yesterday that fished the creeks around Morehead this week with good success finding schooling fish willing to eat. What I've been hearing Berkley Gulp fished very slow is working the best along with Live Mud Minnows. Also, the Zoom Super Fluke Jr in the Gold Fish color has worked well this week.

We've been hearing about a Speckled Trout kill in the creeks off the Neuse River over the last few weeks with the cold weather.  I've received some pretty good news over the last two days, the Speckled Trout action has been pretty good in some of the creeks. So, hopefully this is a sign that not all of the fish got hurt in the cold weather we've had. By talking to these guys it sounded like they were pretty surprised of what kind of action they saw.

If you like to Shad fish, it’s now starting to turn on. We got our supplies in and we're stocked up pretty good. So, if you need any we have you covered. I had a customer come by yesterday who picked up some 2” Curly Tails that fished on Monday and caught around 30 Shad. He went the week before – same spot and caught 0. So,they're on the move with this warm weather. The Pitch Kettle area off the Neuse River seems to be the best area to go if you're heading from here to fish. Over the next few weeks, the shad fishing will be at its peak which can be a lot of fun on light tackle.

Not heard that much from the Surf area yet, but anglers are no just starting to try. I would think if you wanted to try your best shot for some action would be up at Fort Macon Rocks. Black Drum, Red Drum, Dog Fish should start to show up. Biat Shrimp, Mullet, and Liev Mud Minnows woudl be a good choice. Just keep in mind the water is still cold so fishing still going to be slow, but you never know what you might run into.

So, the weather is breaking and the fish are starting to bite. Over the next month, we should start to see a lot of changes going on. It amazes me each year, how all of sudden things change and fish start to show back up. Just like the Blue Fish, it's been freezing cold over the last month but they're already at the reefs in sight of the beach just waiting for the water to warm up and move toward the inlets and beaches.

It's been a very long winter, all of us at the shop are ready for “Spring” to get into full swing!  We've been stocking the shop over the last month and still have product arriving daily. So, we should have you covered from the Surf out to the Blue Water. See You Soon!!!
