Well, we didn’t have much rain this week and the water is getting back to normal. Along with that, we’ve been weighing in some fish this week and receiving pretty good reports back.  What we’re seeing now; the next few days are looking very good for FISHING.

Inshore:

Old Drum fishing really fired up last weekend and should be good going into this weekend. I talked to a few customers that went last weekend and they caught 17 fish so that’s pretty good numbers. This weekend’s weather is looking perfect for fishing. The forecast is calling for light winds which will make the river nice at night for fishing.

Also, I heard of some caught during the day on bait and what has become very popular fishing Popping Cork Rigs. You won’t catch as many during the day as you will at night but it’s pretty good action on light spinning gear.  We have the rods and reels along with all the popping corks you need. Plus, we’re all stocked up on the “Old Drum” bait rigs.  We are getting our first load of “FRESH CAUGHT MULLET” in today for the weekend, which is the best bait you can use for the Old Drum.  How it looks now there should be a great Old Drum bite happening this weekend.

Sheepshead fishing has picked back up over the last few days since the water has cleared up some from all the rain we had the other week.  During the last two days we have weighed some in over the 5lbs range and heard of quite of few being caught.  The go to spots to fish is the Port Area, Bridges and Docks.  Live Sea Urchins and Live Fiddler Crabs will be the bait of choice and we have both back In-Stock since we had some trouble last weekend with the dirty and high water.

Spanish fishing is picking back up after all the rain with good numbers of fish being caught yesterday. It’s still not on fire like it will be in a few weeks but still enough out there to pick up a limit. Fishing the Shipping Channel and along the beaches would be good places to start looking for action. Trolling Clarkspoons, Drone Spoons, Mackerel Trees and Bird Rigs would be great choices to use. I’ve not heard of that much casting action this week but you never know when a school might come up on top to feed.  AR 315 has been producing some of the bigger Spanish on Live Finger Mullet this week. We do still have Live Finger Mullet in stock along with the mini rigs for them.  Also, there’s plenty of small Bluefish in the mix to be caught.

The Redfish bite in the marsh has been pretty good over the last week.  We had our 2nd event in the Carolina Redfish Series last Saturday and plenty of fish were brought to the scales taking over 14lbs to win it.

I went out last Thursday and caught 10 or so in just a few hours so there’s some fish around. I get asked all the time where is the best areas to fish.  In order to catch Redfish you have to put some time into finding them. They aren’t all over the place in the marsh areas.  You’ll find them holding in certain areas. Like last week when I went out I had no luck except on small flat areas and once they moved off the flat they were gone and nothing else. The biggest thing this time of year is finding bait and the fish won’t be far away. Anglers are having the best luck on Topwaters, Redfish Magic’s, Gold Spoons, Gulp and Live Minnows under Popping Corks. I heard of some anglers getting some tailers last week with the full moon and high water.

I’ve not heard of that much on a King Mackerel bite this week but we did weigh one yesterday that was 26lbs caught right outside the inlet on a trolling plug. Also, I heard of a few caught at the Sea Buoy in the last few days.  So, hopefully they’re moving back in since the dirty water had pushed them out last week.  I know there were some caught last weekend over on the East Side, try around AR 285 or the Atlas Tanker would be a good areas to start.  Live Bait or Dead Cigar Minnows would be a good choices to start with when looking for Kings.

There’s still a few Speckled Trout being caught in the area, mostly the ones that we are seeing are by anglers fishing for Redfish in the Marsh areas.  I had a friend that caught a few fishing last week in the Haystacks.  Early morning bites seem to be the best time to catch them. Last week when we were out looking for Redfish I caught one in the 3lb range on a Top Water Plug. It’s not long before we’ll start to get some good fronts and when that happens they’ll begin to bunch up for the fall.

Piers / Surf:

Last week there were a few Spanish caught off the piers along with a few small Bluefish mostly by anglers plugging Got-cha plugs.  Now read this, it’s kind of crazy this early in the year but they’ve caught a few nice Speckled Trout off the pier. It hasn’t been many but we have seen a few this week and last week.

We weighed in some nice Redfish last week from the Fort Macon area. There’s been a few Flounder caught off the Oceanana Pier and in the Surf Zone mostly on Gulp Baits and Live Minnows.

As far as the bottom fishing – we’re seeing a mix of Sea Mullets, Pompano and a few Spots.  We are about a month out when we’re going to see the Surf Fishing really pick up when the water starts to cool down in September.  We got our first load of “FRESH CAUGHT MULLET” in this week so that will be a great bait to take for the Surf Zone.

Offshore:

It’s been kind of tough making it out to the Blue Water but a few boats ventured out this week and came back with Dolphin, Wahoo and a few Sailfish.  A lot of the boats have moved up the coast toward Pirates Cove to fish for White Marlin over the next few weeks because that area this time of year can get good as it gets.

Anyone heading that way, we have some Baitmaster Pee Wee Ballyhoo in stock just for that White Marlin fishing.

We have weighed in a few Nice Wahoo over the last week but from what we’re  seeing the Dolphin bite is slowing down and the Wahoo bite is really getting ready to fire off.  There’s been a few weed lines out in that 20 to 30 mile range that have had plenty of bailer Dolphin around them. I’ve even heard of a few small Dolphin caught around the Sea Buoy which is only 8 miles out in the Shipping Channel.

There’s still good bottom fishing out in the 30 mile range with good numbers of Grouper, Snapper, Triggerfish and Sea Bass most all the head boats are coming back with plenty of fish.

So, if you like to fish in the Ocean - the next few days are going to be PERFECT to make it to the Blue Water.
