FISHING REPORT

I think, we just had our 1st sign of winter being right around the corner with a little snow and cold temperatures into the 30’s yesterday. This is exactly what we needed to get fishing really "FIRED UP". It's been so warm this fall, that the water hasn't cooled down causing the fish to stay spread out more making them hard to catch.

Good cold nights like we've had over the last two days will drop the water temperatures fast making the fish bunch up and start feeding for the winter.  It looks like we're going to have another perfect weekend to fish with it continuing into next week with light winds and warm temperatures.

FREE!!!! Coffee Weekend!!!

Friday – Saturday – Sunday!!!! Until 10am!!!!

Inshore / Nearshore:

We seen a great Redfish bite along our beaches over the last week. Last weekend, there was some great action along Shackleford Banks with some large schools of fish working the Surf Zone. Once you found the fish there was a hook-up on just about every cast. The great thing about it was most of the Reds were 20 inches to upper slot fish. I know of anglers that caught well over 30 fish last Saturday in the Surf Zone. Over the next few weeks I look for the Surf Zone to get better and better plus the Cape Lookout Rock Jetty anyday now will start holding good numbers of Redfish. Vudu Shrimp, Manic Shrimp, Live Shrimp, Live Minnows, Berkley Gulp, Slayer SST Tails and Z-Man Tails are all working well. There's still some good action in the backwaters as well.  A customer came back this week to buy more Live Shrimp that was catching numbers of fish, so that's a great sign.

The Speckled Trout bite has been up and down this year so far. I've seen some great catches of nice fish but they're not bunched up yet.  I think that's all going to change in the next few days as the water temperatures are on the fall.

Already, this week I've gotten reports of more fish being caught in some good numbers with a lot of smaller fish really starting to show up. The Cape Lookout Rock Jetty, Shackleford Banks, Shackleford Rock Jetty, Radio Island Rock Jetty, Haystacks, Core Creek, North River and the Neuse River all are holding fish. All of these areas should get even better with the colder temperatures. Weather like this will make the Cape Lookout Jetty a great place to fish. Live Shrimp, Live Mud Minnows, Vudu Shrimp, Manic Shrimp, Berkley Gulp, Mirrolures, Z-Man, Slayer SST Tails, DOA, Billy Bay Shrimp, Storm Shrimp are all good choices of bait.

Just in the "NEW 3D Manic Shrimp that is the closest shrimp to the Berkley Power Bait 4” Shrimp which was one of the best Speckled Trout lures we had in this area. The new 3D Shrimp comes with no hook or weight so you can rig them the way you want. The body of the 3D Shrimp looks just like a real shrimp because it was molded off of a "Live Shrimp".

The Gray Trout action is great with a lot of fish in the area and some good sized ones at that. Cape Lookout Rock Jetty has a nice class of fish at it in the 3lb range. They seem to be holding at the end of the jetty in deeper water. The Turning Basin and Railroad Tracks also have good numbers of Gray Trout along with around the Inlet area too. Stingsilvers, Jig fish Lures, Live Shrimp and Spec Rigs tipped with Bait Shrimp all are working very well.

The Flounder bite last weekend was "HOT" with numbers of fish being caught. The best catch that I saw came from the Port Wall with 11 keepers. This is the time of the year when they'll stack up on the wall when moving out of the creeks and sound. It acts like a resting spot for the fish before they make their way back to the ocean.

The artificial reefs on the East Side are doing very well with Flounder but it's been hard to get over there with all the wind. It looks like this weekend anglers might have a chance to get into that action. Around the reefs a 2oz Spro Bucktail tipped with 4” Berkley Gulp Shrimp will be the ticket to catch a flattie. The Surf Zone also has big numbers of fish but most of what’s being caught at the Port is keepers and the Surf Zone has been all mixed up. There's a lot of small flounder but anglers are having no problem catching some keeper fish from the mix. Live Mud Minnows, Frozen Finger Mullet, Berkley Gulp, Vudu Shrimp and Live Shrimp all are working the best on the Flounder.

I heard of a few Spots caught last weekend and there's still good Sea Mullets in the area. The Turning Basin area, Inlet and the Dead Tree Hole are all good areas to bottom fish. The Puffers also have moved in with some good-sized ones caught at the Cape Lookout Jetty this week and they'll stay here through the winter. We also have reports of some Hogfish moving into the area. Live Bloodworms, Fresh Shrimp, Gulp Bloodworms and Fish Bites are all working for the bottom-fishing guys.

There's still some King Mackerel being caught.  We weighed in the largest one so far last weekend that weighed in at 60lbs plus we weighed some smaller ones. Most of the action is going to be on the East Side at 285, 1700 Rock, Atlas Tanker and Chicken Rock. The Live Bait has moved on except a few small blue fish but they're even getting hard to find. Now anglers are switching to Dead Cigar Minnows fished on Dead Bait Rigs.

False Albacore were around last weekend around Cape Lookout and on the east beach in good numbers. Now, I really don’t know what this major cold front will do to them. It's possible they might push on offshore but it's going to be a pretty weekend so look for the birds working the water and the Albacore could be there.

Piers / Surf:

The Red Drum are all up and down the beach right now. The anglers that took the ferry over to Shackleford last weekend and walked across to the beach did very well on Red Drum. We also have been seeing them come off the Oceanana Pier and along Atlantic Beach this week.  Berkley Gulp, Vudu Shrimp, Live Shrimp, Live Mud Minnows and Cut Mullet all are working well for the Drum. Along with the Red Drum we're reporting some Black Drum being caught too. Anglers are catching them on Bait Shrimp fished on the bottom. I've heard of some great Sea Mullet catches coming from the Surf Zone on Live Bloodworms.

I'm getting a lot of calls asking if the Speckled Trout action has gotten good in the Surf yet. It hasn't been on fire with tons of fish but I've seen some nice catches. What we're seeing is the trout seem to be spread out all along the beach. With the cold front that we've just had it should get them bunched up making them easier to catch. This week I weighed in a limit that came from the Surf with the largest Speck being right at 4lbs, so that's a great sign. Mirrolures, Live Shrimp under floats, Vudu Shrimp, DOA Shrimp, Berkley Gulp all are catching Speckled Trout.

This past week there's been tons of Flounder along the Surf Zone. The best lure will be Berkley Gulp 4” Swimming Mullet fished on a Slayer Inc 3/8oz Jig Head. Also, Live Mud Minnows are working very well on Flounder Rigs. Pompano and Hog Fish are coming from the Surf and Pier with anglers fishing bottom rigs with Bait Shrimp and Live Bloodworms.

NOTICE:  The Ocennana Pier will close this year on December 1st.  Normally it closes the 2nd week in November but the date has been extended for the pier anglers.

Offshore:

We still haven't had that good of weather to get out to the Blue Water. I know some anglers tried last Sunday but the west wind picked up not allowing that. It looks like we'll have some good weather days coming up so, maybe some boats will be able to get offshore and catch some fish.

I did talk to a customer that told me two weeks ago they went out and came across a weed line and it was loaded with Dolphin. Kind of weird this time of year but who knows what you might run into out there. Some anglers did get out last Saturday to do some bottom fishing and brought back Grouper, Triggerfish, B-Liners and a few Cobia. It looks like Grouper Season will be closing at the first of December so keep that in mind over the next few weeks to get some in the freezer before winter. We still have plenty of Ballyhoo, Cigar Minnows, Squid, Sardines and Squid Wings ready for action.
