Fishing is really starting to get GOOD!!!

Inshore/Near Shore:

This week the Spanish fishing has been on "FIRE". We've seen good numbers of fish before you even reach the Turning Basin and good-sized fish. From the Turning Basin out to the Inlet the birds have been working the bait and the Spanish have been feeding like "CRAZY". They're also up and down the beaches and at Cape Lookout. Anglers are trolling Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Squid Rigs and the Umbrella Clarkspoon Killer all are working very well.

The light tackle casting has really picked up this week. Anglers have been catching fish up to 5lbs casting Spec-Rigs, Jig Fish Lures, Glass Minnow Jigs, Stingsilvers, Got-Cha Plugs all have been working well. Just remember you don’t want to get your lure too big as it will cut down on your bites.

The Blue fish have really turned on this week with very large schools going crazy up at Cape Lookout on the shoals. Most of the blues have been from 2 to 4lbs; now that's lots of fun on light tackle. We even weighed in a 10lb Blue fish that was caught around the Port Wall last week.

I've been getting calls after calls asking where the Kings are since this weekend is the Atlantic Beach King Mackerel Tournament. We haven't seen that many over the last few weeks. But we did weigh in a nice fish that went over 30lbs last weekend that came from the Shipping Channel. But if I had to put money on a spot I'd say it's going to be somewhere on the East Side - 1700 Rock, AR285 and Atlas Tanker would be good areas.

Flounder fishing has really picked up with good numbers of nice fish being caught. Tim from hear at the shop went out on Monday and caught 8 keepers with the biggest being 6lbs. He caught fish at AR315 working Spro Bucktails with Berkley Gulp 4” Baits. Then on the inside around the Port Wall was where he caught the biggest fish. He was working Live Minnows with Carolina Rigs. I've also heard good reports coming from the east side artificial reefs.

Old drum fishing is still going strong with some of the best fishing we've seen in the last few years. Popping Corks and Plastic early in the mornings have been working very well. If you've never caught a 40lb Redfish on a Popping Cork it's something you should try. Also, the bait guys soaking bait on the bottom are still producing very well. With this North blow we have coming in this weekend might make the fish start on the move back toward the Ocean. So, if you want to get in on the action we probably have another two weeks then they'll move on.

We've seen a few Speckled Trout this week with one that was weighed in for the Speckled Trout Challenge that was caught in the Surf. Yes, it's way early for the surf to really turn on but with the mullet blows we're having the trout will set up in the Surf Zone and feed as the mullet come down the beach. The Haystacks also are holding a few fish along with Core Creek. If we can keep this weather pattern we're setting up for another "Epic Trout Season". We do have Live Shrimp in stock for anglers ready to get a jump-start on the season. We also are really stocking up on trout lures. This year we're going to be stocking more than we've ever had. If it's a hot trout bait or catches trout we'll have it in-stock ready for action.

Sea Mullets have been up and down this week. I've still heard of a few nice catches and a few spots. With the cool down we have coming our way this weekend and next week they should really fire off. I'd say this weekend and into next week we'll see a nice push of fish in the area. There are some good numbers of Hog Fish in the Turning Basin along with some Croakers. Anglers are fishing fresh shrimp, bloodworms and fishbites fished on the bottom are having the best luck.

Some anglers forget about the Sheepshead this time of year but they're still here in good numbers and are easier to catch than a few weeks ago. They're like all other fish once the water starts to cool off they also start feeding up before they leave and they'll pile up in big schools. The Port Wall and the Bridges will be the places to look and find the best action. Live Sea Urchins and Live Fiddler Crabs will be the best baits. We have both in stock for a few more weeks.

Piers / Surf:

If you like to plug for Spanish and Blues now is the time. There's "GOOD" action coming from the Oceanana Pier. The Blues are starting to move back in with good numbers so when the Spanish turn off there's plenty of action with the Blues. Got-Cha Plugs have been working the best. Last weekend with the light north wind triggered a Red Drum bite along the surf with the best of it being at Fort Macon toward the Coast Guard Station. This weekend we're going to have a harder North blow so that should really fire off a drum bite along the Surf Zone. Finger Mullet and Cut Mullet will be the bait of choice. For the bottom action we're seeing Sea Mullets, Spots and Hog Fish. Anglers are having the best luck on fresh shrimp, bloodworms, squid and mullet fished right in the wash along the Surf Zone. Remember the fish will be feeding very close in so don’t over cast the fish. There's also some Flounder in the same areas to be caught on Live Mud Minnows fished on Carolina Rigs.

Offshore:

WAHOO!!! WAHOO!!! WAHOO!!!  Fishing has been very good and getting better. Lots of fish were caught last weekend and during this week. Just yesterday a customer came by the shop in the morning to pick up some Ballyhoo. They came back by yesterday afternoon with their limit of Wahoo all around 35lbs each. They were telling me that they lost some very large hoo’s that were pushing 60lbs or more. They had to quit fishing because they ran out of Ballyhoo and left the fish biting.

The best action has been right around the Big Rock then down south of the rock toward the Rise and Swansboro Hole as both areas have been producing good numbers of fish. Blue Water Candy Jags in Black/Purple, Red/Black, Orange/Black and Sea Witches in the same colors have been working very well. We have them all in-stock rigged and unrigged. Boats are still seeing a few Dolphin and Black Fin Tuna mixed in but if you're going Offshore be sure you're rigged up for Wahoo as that has been the name of the game.
