Fishing Report
Wed, Jul 10, 2013 9:07 am

We want to apologize for not writing a fishing report over the last two weeks. As we made our move over to our new location then right into the 4thof July week it has been a pretty crazy time around the shop.

We want to send a sincere “THANK YOU” to everyone that came out and supported us at our new location on our Grand Opening/Customer Appreciation Day. It was one of the most enjoyable days around the shop since we went into business.

We hope everyone had a great time and again “THANKS” for coming out!! We’re already planning another Customer Appreciation Day for next year. So keep on the look out for the date!!!!

Inshore:

Well, with all the wind and rain from last week the water is getting back to normal and so are the fish. Just over the holiday weekend anglers have been catching Spanish up at Cape Lookout and along the beaches. Most anglers have been trolling Clarkspoons, Mackerel Trees, Squid Rigs and Drone Spoons on Planers and Trolling Weights are having the best luck. Over the next few weeks the “Spanish Action” should get better as we’ve had a slow start so far. This past weekend we weighed in a Spanish over 5lbs so that is a good sign that the bigger fish are on the move in. Along with the Spanish you’re going to find Blue Fish mixed in as well.

The Sheepshead fishing has been great and seems to be getting better. We’ve weighed in lots of fish over the 8lbs mark in the last two weeks. It seems that we weigh a citation Sheepshead each day. We’re seeing anglers with just a few fish up to anglers with a cooler full of fish. The Port Wall, all of the bridges in the area and the rock jetties are all holding good numbers of fish with some anglers even having good luck along the docks along the ICW. Live Fiddler Crabs and Live Sea Urchins are the best bait for getting fish in the boat. We have both in stock.

The Flounder action is still somewhat slow but over the last week we’re beginning to see more Flounder come through the shop than we’ve seen all year. There is keeper fish being caught around the Fort Macon area and along any kind of structure you can find to fish. The Port Wall, Bridges, Docks and Rocks can all produce a catch. The marsh areas have Flounder in them as anglers are catching them fishing the deeper holes and drops in the creeks. Anglers are also picking up a few fish drifting the channel behind Shackleford Banks. The guys fishing the reefs with Spro 2oz Bucktails have been getting some good keeper fish also. Anglers are having the best luck on Live Mud Minnows, Gulp Baits which; the “NEW 5” Swimming Mullet” is working great. The Uncle Josh Strip baits also have been working well.

The Red Drum fishing has been up and down with some anglers having great luck and some anglers not having much at all. Middle Marsh, Haystacks, Core Creek and the North River would all be good areas to scout out. I’ve heard that anglers are seeing more fish in the Neuse River but on the small side in the 15 to 20 inch range. I’ve talked to customers that are catching upper slot fish and over slot fish but really won’t give out their locations. Top Waters, Spinner Baits, Gulp and Popping Corks all are working well.

A few Speckled Trout are being caught in the area up toward the Neuse River and down toward Cedar Island. The best action is coming off “Top Water” baits early in the mornings just before the sun gets up and then the action will slow. But anglers are seeing nice sized fish in the 15inch to 20inch range. If everything stays on track we’ll have another great fall on the Speckled Trout. It could be better than we saw last year. Now wouldn’t that be something.

For the bottom guys fishing the turning basin back toward the inlet are catching a mixed bag of Sea Mullet, Hog Fish, Gray Trout, Sharks, Sea Bass and who knows what else you might catch off the bottom in that area. Bottom rigs tipped with bait shrimp and squid has been producing the best.

It’s real late for Cobia to be around but we weighed in 2 fish over the last week that was caught inshore. One was caught along the buoy chain sight fishing in the inlet that weighed over 50lbs. Then another over 50lbs was caught at Cape Lookout on the bottom with Dead Menhaden. So, make sure you put a Bucktail rod in the boat when you go out just in case you see one you’ll be ready.

Piers / Surf:

Fort Macon has been the best spot for action since we’ve gotten into summer with fewer swimmers in the water remember there’s no lifeguard in the park. So, that keeps the beach goers on down the beach. Over the past week surf fishing has produced Red Drum, Black Drum and Flounder. If you can catch it clam enough to walk out on the jetty anglers have been having good luck with the Sheepsehad on Live Fiddler Crabs. Plus there’s a mixed bottom bag with Hog Fish, Sea Mullets, Bluefish, Pompano, Sharks, Skates and Croakers. Live Mud Minnows, Bait Shrimp, Finger Mullet, Squid and Cut Mullet are all good choices for bait.

The Oceanana Pier is reporting some Spanish action but over this past week it has been slow with all the dirty water from the wind and rain. Just within the last few days the water has cleaned up and the Spanish are getting back on the beach. You’re also going to catch Bluefish when plugging with Got-Cha plugs and Pole Kat Lures. They also are catching a few keeper flounder on Live Mud Minnows.

Offshore:

This past weekend was pretty good for the Blue Water. As the wind was pretty calm allowing the smaller boats to get out. We weighed some of the biggest Dolphin we’ve seen and a monster of a Wahoo going close to 60lbs. We heard of few Sail Fish also being caught in the mix along with a few Marlins.

Fish were being caught around the 14 Buoy out toward the Big Rock then down toward the Swansboro Hole.

The bottom fishing was good over the weekend with good numbers of Grouper, Trigger Fish, Sea Bass and AJ’s. The best bite seems to be over on the east side AR300, North East Rock, Russian Wreck, Atlas Tanker, Shad Wreak, East Rock and 17 Rock all reporting catching some fish.

On the West side the North West Places, AR305 and 240 Rock are all holding fish. Cigar Minnows, Menhaden, Mackerel, Squid Wings, Blue Water Candy Roscoe Jigs, Barefoot Decoy Jigs, Williamson Jigs all have been working well for the bottom fisherman.
